DXRacer Formula Series Review
Sitting in front of a screen is not a natural body position, you’re hunched up, static and usually hot. So it makes sense to invest in a good chair. Think about your back, your circulation and your vitals, all can suffer from a poor chair choice and in extreme cases there can be deadly consequences. I'm thinking about air flights and DVT here. It's also clear that if you spend a lot of time on a keyboard you're going to burn through poor quality chairs, especially if you're the huskier type.
My previous gaming chair was nothing special — it cost 200 dollars and fell apart after two years — I wanted something better this time. After doing some research I, purchased an F Series DXRacer Gaming Chair from a store in Sim Lim Square for 599SGD. My friends and research told me this was the one and as of writing this there are very few retailers that stock it. This was one of the places that had it in stock, which enabled me to try it out.
Initially I wasn't sure if I liked the Robocop side panels but aesthetic concerns aside, it felt comfortable and supportive, so I pulled the trigger and took one home. I'm definitely the type who likes to buy on the spot and take away if I like it. I'm trying to change that.
The chair comes in black with various colorful trims. I picked pink because its a lucky color for me, but your mileage may vary. The standard chair comes with a small head rest (with the option to upgrade to a more expensive premium headrest) and an adjustable lumbar support cushion. The manufacturers also sell another optional attachment that nearly put me off the whole thing — a mouse pad to replace the right hand side armrest. I guess it's for reclining and using a mouse at the same time? Cheesy shit and again at an additional cost. You would think they would throw these in with a 600 hundred dollar purchase but no, they’re optional extras.
Assembly is a simple affair; one large Allen key and 20 minutes later and you're ready to go. The chair feels well engineered — you can jump into the seat without fear — and reminds me of the seats you see in the dugouts in English Premier League games or a motor racing seat on wheels. The leather upholstery is durable and has softened nicely to become more comfortable after a little use. When I first tried the chair it was so firm that it took a bit of getting used to. It was like breaking in a new pair of Doc Martens — not the best experience at first but I knew it would get better.
Being able to adjust your chair to fit your seating posture is great for your back
The DXRacer glides along effortlessly on well engineered coasters which is good because it weighs a fair bit. The extra heft makes the chair feel solid so that when its reclined you can shift your weight on the upper wings and balance quite safely without fear of embarrassment. (This is great for power naps.) When you’re seated upright or slightly crouched (ideal for gaming) you can feel the lumbar cushion supporting the small of your back, and when you’re reclined the neck support works great.
Being able to adjust your chair to fit your seating posture is great for your back, and in this regard the DXRacer has got your… you know what. The chair allows you to fully adjust armrest and chair height, enabling you to find your optimal distance from your table or gaming desk. The seat does heat up a bit due to its polyurethane finish, but I personally found it comfortable enough to sit on for five or six hours on end.
You too will feel the difference, especially if you have been using a standard household chair or similar non optimised seat
So far the benefits have been tangible. I no longer experience wrist stress from supported elbows when typing, I’ve adopted correct back posture from sitting straight and have felt a difference in my neck, circulation, back, glutes and spinal column. You too will feel the difference, especially if you have been using a standard household chair or similar non optimised seat.
Living in the tropics this chair also has to be able to withstand the humidity and heat extremes of Singapore with ease. A monthly wipe down with a damp cloth with a little detergent and it comes up a treat.
The chair now feels broken in, I now know exactly how to position it for each discipline. It works equally well when I’m watching something online, typing on the keyboard or getting close and personal to the screen for some FPS action.
This is the most expensive chair I have ever bought but the way I see it, if I can get three years’ use out of it, it will have been a solid investment. Already it has improved my posture, and my gaming experience is better for it as I remain comfortable for longer, and that's worth the extra money to me. If I get six years out of it I'm going to buy another one.
Supportive, back health benefits, fully adjustable, coasters are cool.
