Nope, I was there '07 and '08 :D And sometimes maybe VOIP silence may be a good thing. Based off my own experience, Western servers tend to have more arguments over VOIP. As in they'll really shout and scream. Hehe.

Agreed. I think this whole "losing face" thing plays a big part in it. We can be the most prideful and the most shameless people all at the same time!

Suffocating silence. Very nice way to put it. 8) Fortunately I haven't had the (dis)pleasure of witnessing a TF2 argument over VOIP firsthand, but I know I've wanted to strangle my fair share of noisy online kiddies, Asian or not Asian!

Hey! Were you also at CG in '09?

I agree with what you've said and I'm guilty as charge too.
You see, I think its just that cultural upbringing and values we Asians grew up with and they just don't translate that well over the years(some, not all mind you). That deference to "elderly" or authoritative figure, in this case, a well-known, established and experienced person in the game's industry. But mostly of that abominable fear of appearing stupid and "losing one's face" in public. :(

Like you said, they just don't want to be That Guy. Really, I think asians in general are insecure about ourselves.

I personally know what you're talking about, because I've been to CG Overdrive twice myself! :D Yeah, the silence can get suffocating at times, and it's almost always the same few people asking questions.

Anyway, when I played TF2, if some kid starting blathering and blaming the team and shouting "NOOB DO THIS DO THAT", and someone else speaks up, an ugly argument over VOIP usually happens, 'cause you can't just reach out and grab the kid's neck :p Personally to keep things from getting ugly, I just shut up and ignore the kid, and use voice only to notify teammates about spy/spotting.

Makes me wonder what the rest of the players--presumably the more mature ones--are doing about the state of their team's VOIP while the noob spastic kids are blathering away. Waiting for somebody else to get the ball rolling, I daresay. It's always the same story.

I kept thinking maybe it was specific to the graphics crowd or the cg crowd or whatever, but it looks like it's really a Thing wherever you go.

So far, every guy I've heard speaking through the mic are noob spastic kids trying to give orders and whining. Those without mic do it via keyboard.

Proper team game, it works, and when I engage in squad battles I do talk to my teammates. But public game where 2/3 of your teammates are <50% win rate, it's better for people to shut up. Asians probably have better upbringing, and they know not to do unto others what they would not have others do unto them.

Absolutely. There's this annoying habit of ours that keeps us silent during any public QA session. I think it's more to do with the way our education system works. And maybe a dash of culture. It's annoying and embarrassing.
