And this coming from an “old skool” gamer who can no longer tell a Celatid from a Silacoid.
XCOM Enemy Unknown is scheduled for international release on October 12, 2012, and if you’re not excited yet, you either didn’t play the 1994 sleeper hit, or, I dunno. You have no heart. Or you’re way too jaded as a gamer and you need to break out and rediscover the wonder of saving the planet from alien invaders all over again.
Every gamer who has XCOM near and dear to his heart has a handful of those war stories tucked away in his mental Happy Place, deep beneath all the FPS bravado and the MMO obsessive-compulsive behavior. What about the time when you had your rookie take a careful aimed shot at a charging Chrysalid, only to miss and fatally wound the XCOM operative standing just a couple of meters behind it? Or the time when one of your men panicked, let loose a few stray bullets, accidentally hit a gas pump, and caused a huge explosion that flattened the entire corner, blowing up a Cyberdisk and a third of all the civilians on the map? Did you ever pretend not to hear about UFO sightings and terror reports because you so badly wanted to see what the scientists in your lab were coming up with? Sell off a container-load of Floater corpses because you were running low on funds? Name a soldier after someone you knew and lost him to a plasma blast of unknown origin three steps off the ramp of the Skyranger?
“Hey Jed,” the XCOM vets out there are saying. “Thanks for stating the obvious.”
Yeah, yeah. XCOM Enemy Unknown is out next month. What are your memorable XCOM war stories?
